Donut Savant--Oakland (Donuts)

I'm not normally someone who is huge on sweets, but when I find something that is prepared well using quality ingredients, I will enjoy it. Located at 1934 Broadway, Donut Savant serves up cute little donuts that won't hurt your pocketbook or your waistline...well, unless you eat too many. They have small-sized donuts, that aren't sickeningly sweet, ranging from $0.75 to $2 each with flavors that include daily staples as well as ever-changing donut options. They also serve coffee to dunk your sweets in. Below are some of the things I've enjoyed.

Maple Glaze. Always an excellent choice for a yeast donut. The only thing that would have made this better would be some bacon on top of that glaze.

Coconut. A small bite of flaky coconut stuck to some frosting. This one was a cake donut.

Salted Maple. Another excellent cake donut. The little bits of salt bring out all those maple and sweet flavors.

Boston Cream. Love the chocolate they use; it was dense and dark and mildly sweet. This one was over-filled with creamy custard.

Vanilla Glaze. A small bite of simplicity with this cake donut and their vanilla glaze.

Chocolate Glaze. The same dark chocolate was on this donut that was used for the Boston Cream Donut. Very nice.

Apple Fritter. Little bits of apple were incorporated into the end pieces of donut dough and then fried and glazed. This one goes great with coffee.

Maple Glazed Cro'nut. The non-donut that changed my life. If you are not familiar with cronuts, they are basically croissant dough that has been fried like a donut...hence the name.

This was the last item I tried from Donut Savant and I think this will be the only thing I order from now on from any fried delight bakery. So pillowy soft, fluffy, moist, and buttery without being heavy or greasy or too sweet. Amazing. Just amazing.

So if in the mood for tiny fried treats, feel free to fill a box or just a small bag with anything from Donut Savant. Your sweet/carb/fried craving will be satisfied.
